OUR HISTORY & MISSION

Bluegrass Opera & Music Thaetre is a 501(c)(3) non-profit performing arts organization based in Lexington -- the heart of Kentucky's beautiful "Bluegrass" region, and an area built on the unceded, ancestral lands of indigenous tribes, including the Shawnee, Cherokee, Mingo, and Tutelo peoples.

Founded in 2008, we are a collective of theatre artists that specializes in works that defy traditional categorization -- whether plays, musicals, operas, or something in between. Now in our 15th season, we have received hundreds of works from writers and composers throughout the U.S. and more than twenty other countries. We've produced some two dozen of them in their entirety and workshopped dozens more. Our mission is to enrich our community and commonwealth, as well as the field of theatre and its constituent artists, through high-quality performances of impactful works.

We are committed to lifting up the voices, bodies, and stories of historically marginalized groups, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and persons with disabilities, and we especially encourage creative and performing artists from these groups to audition for us, interview with us, and share their work with us.
